Elie broke his back in 2006 near Lubumbashi in southeastern DRC when the artisanal mine shaft he was working in collapsed.

He was paralyzed from the waist downwards and has lost all feeling in his lower body.

From a poor family, at home his parents could do nothing for him and he spent five years without leaving the house. Elie went untreated and unable to walk until 2011, when ACDF found Elie through their outreach programme in Lubumbashi.

Following physiotherapy, Elie was fitted with two long braces and a corset. He now Stands Proud and is studying at a local school.

After secondary school, Elie would like to study Information Technology at the university level.
